Leap Year Goodies

February 29 is a rarity in the Gregorian calendar. To celebrate this arbitrarily important day, I decided that a few super chilled out songs would be nice. Each of these is quite calming, almost therapeutic, to listen to — great for nighttime summer driving or lying in bed, not for bumping at parties. Enjoy this trifecta, but more importantly, enjoy your only February 29 for the next four years.

Pharaohs (What So Not's 'Club ReRub') - SBTRKT

What So Not is an up-and-coming duo based out of Sydney that blends "sarcastic synth leads, vocal transpositions, & the ever-essential 808" to form "their own eclectic brand of dance music." Its constituents, young producers Flume and Emoh Instead, already had sizable followings of their own before teaming up to form an all-star alliance. Although each is still producing individually, the two have come out with their first EP, 7 Dollar Bill, which was highly praised by some of the biggest names in the EDM scene for its expert production and creativity. This came as no surprise to those who had already been keeping up with Flume, who has demonstrated an impressive knack for music production since mere post-pubescence. Anyway, enjoy this parcel of goodness along with a little something extra.

Check out a previous post specifically on Flume right... here.

My World (Gooffee Remix) - Iggy Azalea

As a friend of mine put it the other night, "I can't tell whether this song is badass or weird as shit." In all honestly, I feel the same way about this one. However, there is something about this remix that has kept me playing it over and over again throughout the last few days. Gooffee, a duo of rockers-gone-EDM from Toronto, threw down a sick beat, incorporated some voice alterations, and sampled a few goodies from around the music world to create a strikingly interesting remix. Enjoy!

Editor's Cut Vol. 5

It's been far too long since I've posted an Editor's Cut, so without further ado, I bring to you the fifth installment of the series. The six tracks respectively range from funk and ambient funk and get progressively more electronic-feeling, with a brief, bassy interlude of light dubstep with Jakwob's remix of "DJ Ease My Mind."

Pumped Up Kicks (Gigamesh Remix) - Foster The People

What Did I Do (All The Lights Remix) - Kele

Disappearance - Moonbeam (feat. Avis Vox)

DJ Ease My Mind (Jakwob Remix) - Niki & The Dove

Invisible (Original Mix) - Moguai & Polina

Relocation (Original Mix) - Feed Me

Something For The Weekend (Joey Negro Z Mix) - Ben Westbeech

I apologize for my posting delinquency over the last few days. My internet has been out at home (and still is—I'm having to use my school's internet for the time being). That being said, I'll try to keep the posts to a maximum while I endure this terrible hardship. In honor of the fact that it is Friday, I bring you Joey Negro's remix of "Something For The Weekend." It's funky, so prepare to groove. Enjoy!

Shlohmo – Rained the Whole Time (Nicolas Jaar Remix)

I have tremendous respect for artists who are able to turn everyday sounds into beautiful music. In this captivating track, Nicolas Jaar tells a musical narrative with sound; as the song progresses, these sounds (whatever they are...) become more muted and Jaar's unique hyper-minimalistic electronica sound takes over. The remix comes from Shlohmo's Vacation EP, which was released today and features originals as well as a few well-done remixes. Enjoy!

Get In the October Cart, Pig - Deadmau5

Another Deadmau5 track? Yes. Just days after his release of "Maths" (listen here), Deadmau5 has released another beautifully-done track. Aside from having one of the most absurd names out there, "Get In the October Cart, Pig" is also a remastered version of "Get In the Cart, Pig," which was released back in 2010. Definitely check it out because it's super trancey and delightful.

Good (Les Loups I.D. Mix) - Niels Freidel

Les Loups is a production trio from Hannover, Germany specializing in French house, nu disco, and funk. I'd say this remix could be categorized as a fusion of all three of those genres. Check out Les Loups' SoundCloud for more goodies. Enjoy!

Maths (Original Mix) - Deadmau5

Joel Zimmerman (AKA Deadmau5) released a song entitled "Maths" today—previous versions of the song were released as early as February of 2011, but the official final version was released today. The production aspect of the song is typical of Mr. Zimmerman, featuring deep, repetitive bass lines, heavy synths, and a very big-room trancey vibe. I'm not as big of a fan of this new release as some of his other songs, so I'm secretly using this as an excuse to post some of my all-time favorites by the legend himself. Check out Deadmau5's remix of "You and I" here (also an all-time fave). If you have headphones, definitely wear them because Deadmau5 has some really deep bass that can not be picked up by computer speakers, etc. Enjoy!

Interestingly enough, Deadmau5 heard this song in a dream and decided to create what he imagined, so this song is the product of pure mental creativity.

Happy Valentine's Day!

To honor all our lovers out there (and all our single people—hell, I'm single), we've got a few new musical masterpieces that were released today. Happy Valentine's Day, and enjoy!
First of all, Dillon Francis (SoundCloud | Facebook) released a new EP today entitled Something, Something, Awesome. I must agree—it is awesome. I apologize in advance, but there's no download on this one. It's available for purchase on BeatPort (or you can just search for a download link—they're out
there).

Secondly, one of my favorite emerging dubstep artists, PatrickReza (SoundCloud | Facebook), released a 13-minute mix that is absolute fire. Although it may not be Valentine-themed, it was still released today, and therefore is eligible in a Valentine's Day post.

______________________________________________________________________

Another piece of sparkling Valentinian goodness that was released today is a bit different from the typical musipus post—I might classify its genre as "electro-soul" for fear of some complaining that Usher's appearance in the song inherently makes it hip-hop/r&b. The single, "Climax," was released today by international mega-producer/DJ Diplo (SoundCloud | Facebook). The song is produced by Diplo, and Usher is singing over it. Personally, I  can totally dig it even though I'm not the biggest fan of Usher.

Last, but certainly not least, is a new remix dropped by one of my favorites, Goldroom (SoundCloud | Facebook). This time around, the funk god remixes Lancelot's "We Can Dance." Enjoy this groovy greatness.

Hide & Seek (Styles&Complete Remix) - Kid Sister

I've been playing this one a bunch over the last few days. Styles&Complete is the DJ duo of  A-Styles and DJ Complete, both of whom are veterans in the music scene. The group coined the genre "dirty south electro swag," a fusion of "popular sounds of electro and dubstep with the sonic elements of classic pavement breaking, booty shaking Dirty South Hip Hop." Anyway, this remix of Kid Sister's "Hide & Seek" starts off slowly but then drops pretty damn hard with a gnarly rap verse from Riff Raff (Yes, the former MTV star off From G's to Gents). The song would go absolutely nuts in a live DJ set, and it has a lot of really uncommon sounds considering today's increasingly uniform EDM scene, so props to Styles&Complete for that. Check out their SoundCloud for more music and mashups. Enjoy!

Must Be The Feeling (Brookes Brothers Remix) - Nero

This remix of Nero's "Must Be The Feeling" is brought to you by UK drum & bass DJ's/producers Brookes Brothers. Personally, I enjoy this remix much more than the original, but the original does have a super cool music video in its corner. Check out Brookes Brothers SoundCloud if you like this remix. Enjoy!

Magic Trooper (OVERWERK Remix) - Mord Fustang

Mord Fustang is one of my absolute favorite electronic artists. His style is very unique, and no one does it better than he does. This remix of his "Magic Trooper" by OVERWERK completely captures Mord Fustang's signature vibe while also adding a few glitchy womps here and there. I'm also including a couple favorites by Mr. Fustang that definitely deserve some recognition. Enjoy!

P.S. I posted about Mord Fustang earlier this year when he released his single "We Are Now Connected," which you can check out here.

You and I (Deadmau5 Remix) - Medina

I don't even know what to say about this song, other than that it is simply amazing. My assumption is that you have at least heard of Deadmau5, the virtually uncontested king of trance/progressive house (rivaled only perhaps by Kaskade). This remix is a couple years old, but it is absolutely incredible regardless. Shoutout to my buddy Scott for showing me this. Enjoy!

Bang Bang - Fytch

This impressive dubstep mash-up was released a few days ago by a Dutch producer by the name of Fytch. The track samples "Doomsday" by Cas One & Figure, "Russian Lullaby" by Ella Fitzgerald, "Suicidal Thoughts" by Notorious B.I.G., and "Bang Bang" by Nancy Sinatra (the daughter of Frank). Although it may seem like an unlikely mixture of music, the resulting fusion is very unique works well as a whole. Plus it has a pretty interesting drop. Check out Fytch's SoundCloud for more songs and free downloads. Enjoy!

Last Night - Robotic Pirate Monkey & Rodway

This mellow track was released two days ago by a group known as Robotic Pirate Monkey. The trio from Boulder, Colorado have been quite active lately, having released their newest album Colors In Disguise back in December. You can check out and download Colors In Disguise as well as some other EP's and sets on their SoundCloud. Enjoy!

Rusko Concert Recap

Last night, I went to a Rusko concert in Memphis, Tennessee. Needless to say, it was absolutely incredible. The Englishman was well-received by the crowd, and he had a great stage presence that got literally everybody in the crowd moving—bouncing, nodding, jumping, swaying, mosh-pitting, etc. Of course, the crowd went nuts when he played his biggest songs, "Everyday (Netsky Remix)," "Woo Boost," and "Somebody To Love." His set included a lot of original music, heavy moombah and reggae influences, a bit of hip-hop and rap, and some other American favorites (including his remix of "California Love"). Along with having an unbeatable stage presence, Rusko was also a top-notch DJ, a rumor of which I was skeptical before seeing him live. Everything was mixed perfectly to keep the energy up for over two hours straight. After he finished his set, the crowd began chanting "Rusko! Rusko! Rusko!," so of course, the superstar came back and played another 20-minute encore set, which the crowd loved. Overall, it was an amazing show—if you see that he is coming to your city (tour schedule), I would highly, highly recommend buying tickets. Check out Rusko's SoundCloud, like him on Facebook, or check out his website for more information.

Set Fire - 3LAU

His name may be hard to pronounce (it's pronounced "Blau"), but this emerging producer/mashup artist and college student from Las Vegas surely knows how to remix a song. In "Set Fire," 3LAU mixes Michael Calfan's unmistakable build-up from "Resurrection" with the silky-smooth vocal melodies of Adele. A lot of people complain that mashups lack originality, which is true to some extent—"Set Fire" picks up from the 1:00 mark of "Resurrection" with seemingly no added production twists. However, "Set Fire" is about as catchy as they come and certainly rivals, if not surpasses, the original "Resurrection" in terms of club playability. All 3LAU's downloads are available for free on his SoundCloud, and, as you may notice, a majority of his productions are progressive house with contemporary pop vocals tracked on top. Also, I'm including Michael Calfan's "Resurrection." (I've been looking for an excuse to post it for a while anyway.) Enjoy, and go support 3LAU!

Youth (Adventure Club Remix) - Foxes

So Adventure Club just came out with yet another song, a remix of Foxes' "Youth." It's been a mere two weeks since the release of "Do I See Color," but the duo is back at it again. The remix still has the unique Adventure Club feel, but it seems more chilled out than most of their other music. It's available for free on their SoundCloud, or you can listen and download here. Enjoy!

Editor's Cut Vol. 4

Hello again. I apologize for the lack of posts for a couple days—I've been saving up some favorites for this Editor's Cut. I tried to make this one about as calming as possible, so there's some smooth dubstep, a bit of drum&bass, and a sprinkle of trip-hop. Have a good weekend, and enjoy! (Download the whole set here.)

Breathe (Pink Floyd Cover) - Capital Cities (feat. Tupac Shakur)

This remix of Pink Floyd's "Breathe" off The Dark Side of the Moon is brought to you by an LA-based duo called Capital Cities. You may be thinking, "Pink Floyd and Tupac in the same song?" But no—it works. Capital Cities does a great job of bringing a modern yet groovy feel to an all-time classic, and the addition of a couple verses by Tupac adds an unexpected twist. Check out some more of Capital Cities on their SoundCloud or Facebook (they have some free downloads if you like their page). Enjoy!

We Must Go On - Pretty Lights

If you're in to electronic music, you should have heard of Pretty Lights by now. Within the last couple of years, the man has grown to absolute enormity, with a record label under his name (Pretty Lights Music) and sold out shows nearly everywhere he plays. Well Pretty Lights just released another single entitled "We Must Go On," which masterfully samples Johnson, Hawkins, Tatum, & Durr's "You Can't Blame Me." The single, along with the rest of Pretty Lights' music, is available for free on his website with a simple plea for donations. He also released an accompany video that I'll include. If you like the sound of this, check out the rest of Pretty Lights' stuff (seriously, it's great) on SoundCloud, and show him some love for all the free downloads. Enjoy!
